Georgia football has two coaching spots to fill: the 10th assistant as allowed by new rules and the replacement for Kevin Sherrer, who took the Tennessee defensive coordinator job.

It appears coach Kirby Smart has a top candidate to fill Sherrer’s vacancy. Dan Lanning, Memphis’ inside linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator, is expected to become the outside linebackers coach, according to a report from FootballScoop.

Lanning has worked with Smart. He was on the Alabama staff with Smart and assistant coaches Mel Tucker and Glenn Schumann in 2015 as a graduate assistant who worked with outside linebackers. He then joined the Memphis staff in 2016, where he has served for the last two seasons.

Sherrer has stayed on with Georgia to coach through the College Football Playoff, as Smart did at Alabama and Jeremy Pruitt ― headed to become the coach at Tennessee ― has at Alabama.

The Bulldogs won on Monday to advance to the National Championship Game. The Bulldogs will take on the winner of the Alabama-Clemson game on Jan. 8.

If Lanning is officially hired, three of the four defensive assistants would have served on the 2015 Alabama staff. Defensive line coach Tray Scott is the exception.
