Matthew Stafford reportedly has a big reason to be happy.
On Monday night, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the former Georgia quarterback agreed to a five-year contract expected to make Stafford the highest-paid player in NFL history. For reference, Schefter said that Stafford’s deal is expected to top the $25 million per year salary enjoyed by Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr.
Stafford, who entered the NFL as the top overall pick by the Lions in the 2009 NFL Draft, has 30,303 yards passing and 187 touchdowns in his pro career. He had 7,731 yards passing with 51 touchdowns and 33 interceptions at Georgia from 2006-08.
Per Sportrac, Stafford made a base salary of $17 million last season. He was slotted to make a base salary of $16.5 million this year.
Stafford had 4,327 yards passing with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season.
