Deandre Baker, Rodrigo Blankenship receive AP All-American honors

A day after releasing the first AP Poll of the season,  the Associated Press released its preseason All-American teams and two Bulldogs made the cut.

Deandre Baker was the lone first team representative for Georgia, as he and fellow SEC cornerback Greedy Williams got the nod at cornerback. Baker had a very impressive 2017, as he snagged three interceptions.

Baker has also attracted the attention of NFL scouts, as ESPN’s Todd McShay had previously ranked Baker as the No. 17 overall prospect for the 2019 NFL Draft.

The other Bulldog on the list is kicker Rodrigo Blankenship, who made the second-team. Last season, Blankenship connected on 20 of his 23 attempts, including a pivotal 55-yard field goal in the Rose Bowl. That kick was the longest made field goal in the history of the Rose Bowl. He was also perfect on kicks from inside 40 yards.

Blankenship was also named to ESPN’s All-American team.

Wisconsin and Alabama tied for the most players on the two teams, as both schools had five players named to the team.

Georgia locks up one future opponent, looking at another

After reports first trickled out over the weekend, it was confirmed on Tuesday that Georgia will be playing Oregon to kickoff the 2022 season. That game will be played in Atlanta.

And now there are multiple reports out that Georgia is looking to schedule a home-and-home with the Texas Longhorns. But according to 247Sports’ Chip Brown, the Georgia-Texas series won’t be played till 2028-29.

Texas has home-and-home series lined up with LSU, Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan as well. Georgia meanwhile has a home game against Notre Dame in 2019, followed by a game against Virginia in Atlanta in 2020 and a home-and-home with UCLA in 2025-26.

Georgia opens this year’s schedule against Austin Peay. That game is scheduled for Sept. 1 and will start at 3:30 p.m.
