DALLAS – Given three more days to mull it over, Kirby Smart still isn’t ready to name Georgia’s starting quarterback. And it sounds like it won’t happen for awhile.
“The answer’s probably coming sometime in September,” Smart said on Tuesday night, speaking to a group of Texas-based alumni at a UGA in Dallas event.
Smart said that at the outset of a question-and-answer session, lightheardly warning them what to expect if they asked about it.
“This will be my first offseason question about the quarterbacks,” Smart said, and the crowd laughed. “I’m well-prepared if they want a quarterback update. So as you guys know I’m well-prepared for that, and obviously ready to answer that. Not that you’ll get the answer you want. You’ll get an answer on it. You won’t get the answer on it.”
The approach worked; No one asked a quarterback question. There was also no media availability before the session, and Smart ducked out a back exit after a lengthy period mingling and posting pictures with fans.
The only time Smart even mentioned a quarterback wasn’t by name. Late in his remarks, when asked about recruiting nationally, he mentioned “the quarterback that everyone wants to know about.” That would be freshman Jacob Eason of Lake Stevens, Wash.
Eason’s performance was the talk of G-Day. He ran third team most of the spring, while last year’s starter Greyson Lambert ran with the first team and Brice Ramsey went with the second team most of the time.
