A subtle "jazz hands" wave became the trademark touchdown celebration for Sony Michel during his four years as a running back at Georgia.

Sony Michel: Fan support helped propel Georgia to greatness in 2017

Chip Towers

Georgia’s football team had a historic season in 2017, and DawgNation was along for the entire ride. The Bulldogs’ season will be celebrated March 15 with DawgNation Appreciation 2018. Some of the stars of the 2017 team will be on hand for the celebration, including running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel and linebackers Roquan Smith and Davin Bellamy.

Michel finished his as the third-leading rusher in Georgia football history. Despite sharing time with his best friend and roommate, Chubb, Michael compiled 3,638 yards and 33 rushing touchdowns. He had 1,227 yards as a senior during a season in which he’d pass both Garrison Hearst and Todd Gurley and was named MVP of the Rose Bowl with four touchdowns — including the game-winner in overtime — in the victory over Oklahoma.

In preparation for his DawgNation Appreciation appearance, Michel wrote this letter to thank Georgia fans for their support during this career:

Dear Dawg Nation,

We could kind of tell before the season, just prior to camp, that we had a special team. You could tell just from how competitive we were and how everybody was doing everything Coach Smart was telling us to do. But before we even got to the first game, we started hearing that our fans were buying up most the tickets at Notre Dame. That’s when we started to realize that the Dawg Nation was thinking it was going to be a special season, too. At that point we knew that the players were all in, the fans were all in and the coaches are all in.

When we finally got to Notre Dame, I noticed how many Georgia fans were there when we pulled up on the bus. That was a legitimate Dawg Walk, just like the ones we have at home in front of our gate! I knew at that point, yeah, this is going to be a special night. And it was.

And that’s the way it was all year. Our fans were everywhere we went, and I can’t tell you how much we appreciated that. That’s why I’m looking forward to DawgNation Appreciation Night. We don’t get many chances to interact with fans, where we get to talk to them and meet them and they get to ask questions. Most of the time, they have to get their questions answered from stuff they read, stuff they watch. This time, they’ll get to ask their own questions and have their own personal experience. And we get to say thanks.

I look forward to meeting everybody on March 15th. We appreciate you as football fans and as part of the Georgia Bulldogs family. Keep supporting the Dawgs!

Sincerely,

Sony Michel
