Recruiting metric shows Georgia football has the talent to win a national championship this season
Welcome to Good Day, UGA, your one-stop shop for Georgia football news and takes. Check us out every weekday morning for everything you need to know about Georgia football, recruiting, basketball and more.
Georgia football has national title hope based on this
Bud Elliott of SB Nation released his 2017 Blue-Chip Ratios, a recruiting metric used to determine whether a team is capable of winning a national title.
It boils down to teams that sign more four- and five-star recruits than two- and three-stars, over the previous four recruiting classes. That’s an exclusive club, usually consisting of the top 10 percent of FBS programs. All of the national champs over the last decade-plus have accomplished it, and often, the team taking home the trophy has signed many more elite players.
This season, 10 teams have a ratio of greater than 50 percent, which means there are 10 teams talented enough to contend for the championship this season. Among those 10 are the usual suspects of Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, and Florida. Then, coming in at No. 5, are the Georgia Bulldogs with a 63 percent Blue-Chip Ratio.
Mark Richt never struggled to find talent to play for Georgia, but through two seasons, Kirby Smart is putting up numbers that should have UGA perennially in the title conversation.
Kirby Smart inherited a good Georgia roster from Mark Richt, but his first two classes are humming at 74 percent, while Richt’s final two were at 53. It’s not yet known if Smart can coach, but Georgia’s talent is being upgraded.
I still think it’s a stretch to say Georgia is a national championship contender. It’s not a stretch to say Georgia has the talent to be one. It also has the most talent in the SEC East, which means a trip to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game should be in the cards, all else being equal.
Of course, all else is not equal. Recruiting isn’t the only factor that determines whether a team is among the best of the best. It’s a big part of the equation, and the part of the equation Georgia ostensibly has figured out. The jury is still out on other big parts of the equation — like coaching. But the caliber of talent on this roster is reason 1A why anything less than an SEC East title in 2017 would be a major disappointment.
Andrew Thomas is top of his class so far
Speaking of the talented players Smart has brought to Athens, the offensive line recruits in the Class of 2017 are among the most likely newcomers to see significant minutes as the offense tries to improve on a weak showing from the line last year. Freshman Andrew Thomas could start at right tackle or left guard. And there seems to be one factor that sets him apart from his fellow freshmen. From Seth Emerson of DawgNation:
Thomas came to Georgia from Pace Academy in Atlanta with some hype, but not as much as others. He quickly made up for it with his work ethic, which can be traced to a humility and other attributes not usually seen in 18-year-olds.
When Smart was asked during that news conference what Thomas has to be capable of to start at right tackle as a freshman, the normally loquacious coach’s answer was four words long.
“Maturity. He’s extremely mature,” Smart said.
Georgia ranked 15th in AP poll
The preseason AP Top 25 poll was released on Monday, and the Bulldogs are ranked in the same place they are ranked in the coaches poll: 15th. That’s the top ranking in the SEC East, two spots ahead of Florida at No. 17. But as Dawg fans know all too well, it ain’t about where you start, it’s about where you finish.
