Welcome to your one-stop shop for Georgia football news and takes every Monday through Friday. In this edition, we look at Georgia’s worst-ever uniforms, the progression of Jim Chaney throughout his career as a coordinator, and three storylines to keep an eye on as fall camp begins.
Are you ready for some football?
It’s official: Football season has begun.
Georgia opens fall camp Monday, and in just over a month, the Bulldogs will kick off against Appalachian State at Sanford Stadium. But there is a lot to figure out between now and then. We have plenty of time to get into the nitty gritty of everything these Bulldogs need to accomplish in preseason, but to get you started, here are the three most important storylines.
Finding a threat at receiver
Javon Wims and Isaac Nauta have the potential to be deep threats. Terry Godwin made strides during spring practice. And Mecole Hardman is one of the most important players on the team this season. Which of these receivers will step up and become go-to options for Jacob Eason?
Locking down a No. 1 “star”
Georgia’s strength this season will be its defense, thanks to all the players it brings back from a year ago. But one position where there isn’t continuity is the “star” cornerback. It’ll either be Tyrique McGhee, Aaron Davis or freshman Deangelo Gibbs who takes the place of Maurice Smith. For now, which of those three wins the job is anyone’s guess.
Finding the right combination on the offensive line
A good argument can be made that the terrible play of the offensive line was the root of all Georgia’s problems in 2016. While a few of the guys from that group remain, this unit will look much different than it did a year ago. A few career backups will have the chance to step into the spotlight, and a few freshmen have a chance to earn immediate playing time. This might be the most important question of the season: Will the line be better or just different?
According to Jim
Here’s another important preseason storyline to take note of: The progression of Jim Chaney as offensive coordinator.
Seth Emerson of DawgNation looked at the history of Chaney’s offenses during his more than 20-year career as an offensive coordinator. Make sure you read it to get an in-depth look at the man who could make or break Georgia’s chance this season. But here’s the gist: You want him to be Purdue Jim Chaney, not Tennessee or Arkansas Jim Chaney.
Chase Kalisz wins second gold at FINA World Championships
The 17th FINA World Championships wrapped up this past weekend in Budapest, Hungary, but not before former Bulldogs swimmer Chase Kalisz earned his second gold medal of the meet. On Sunday, Kalisz added a title in the 400-meter individual medley to the one he won in the 200-meter IM on Thursday. His time of 4:05.90 broke the meet record set by Michael Phelps in 2007. He also joined Phelps and Ryan Lochte as the only people to ever finish the 400 IM in under 4:06.
Burn these rags
Morgan Moriarty of SBNation asked folks on Twitter what they thought were the worst uniforms in college football history. In the end, she rounded up 73 entries, and this Georgia monstrosity from the Boise State game in 2011 was described as “the single most reviled uniform sent to us on Twitter during this experiment.”

Even without the result of that game factored in (a 35-21 loss to the Broncos), these duds are just awful. Never again, Bulldogs fans.
