ATHENS — On a hot and humid Saturday afternoon, the Georgia football team went between the hedges for its first of three preseason scrimmages.

This culminates the first two weeks of practice, and will be followed by some personnel decisions, such as depth chart adjustments. The media was only permitted to view a drill early on, and not the scrimmage itself. Coach Kirby Smart will meet with the media afterwards.

One player who was not participating was senior left tackle Isaiah Wynn, who has missed all week of practice with what Smart has described as an illness.

While Wynn was not present during the pre-scrimmage drills, he was seen in uniform beforehand — though without a helmet.

A few other notes:

  • Sophomore Pat Allen was working back at left guard, second team behind freshman Andrew Thomas. Allen was first-team left guard during spring practice and the first week of preseason, then Thomas took over first-team duties there this week.
  • Redshirt freshman Ben Cleveland continued to get first-team work at right tackle, with senior Dyshon Sims sliding over to first-team left tackle in Wynn’s absence. That’s been the plan all week. However, with Allen shifting back to left guard, the second-team right tackle appeared to be freshman Isaiah Wilson.
  • Redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Sage Hardin continues to sit out with an unspecified injury he sustained in the spring.
  • Freshman receiver J.J. Holloman looked to be sitting out the preseason. Holloman had been practicing some this week after hurting a hamstring last week.
