ATHENS — The Georgia playing career of wide receiver Shakenneth Williams is nearly officially over.

Williams has applied for a medical disqualification, coach Kirby Smart said on Monday. That would allow Williams to stay on scholarship but not have it count against the team’s NCAA scholarship limit of 85.

“Shakenneth has applied for a medical exemption. We think we’ll get that back any day now,” Smart said.

It’s not clear what Williams’ injuries are. In the spring, when Williams acted as a student assistant coach, Smart said Williams was dealing with several injuries.

The departure of Williams and the addition of junior-college transfer Ahkil Crumpton would leave Georgia with a projected 84 scholarship players. That does not include signees Robert Beal and Devonte Wyatt, who have been been cleared to play yet.

Williams has 4 career catches, 3 of them his freshman year. He appeared in 15 games over his three seasons.
