ATHENS — Maurice Smith may have gotten to Georgia just in time.

There is no word yet on the severity of the injury, but senior safety Quincy Mauger appears in a picture with head coach Kirby Smart from Sunday wearing a walking boot on his left foot. Mauger is the Bulldogs’ starting strong safety.

Smith, meanwhile, just arrived in Athens Friday night and practiced with the team on Saturday, his first workout of a three-practice acclimation period after being granted a graduate transfer from Alabama. Smith was a part-time starter at safety and nickelback for the Crimson Tide and played regularly on their defense.

Smart did not mention an injury to Mauger after the Bulldogs’ scrimmage this past Saturday and won’t be available to answer questions again until Tuesday. Players sometimes wear walking boots when they’ve suffered only a minor ankle or foot injury as a preventative measure.
