There are currently 18 head coaches, out of 128 teams at the FBS level, who are alums of their schools. Here they are:

  • Kirby Smart, Georgia: First year.
  • Jim Harbaugh, Michigan: 10-3 in his first season back in Ann Arbor.
  • David Shaw, Stanford: When Harbaugh left Stanford five years ago the school replaced him with Shaw, and it’s paid off: The Cardinal are 54-14 since then with three Rose Bowl appearances and one Fiesta Bowl victory.
  • Mark Richt, Miami: Still feels weird to read that, huh?
  • Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State: Elevated from offensive coordinator in 2005 to replace Les Miles, Gundy has gone 94-47.
  • Kliff Kingsbury, Texas Tech: The former Red Raiders quarterback is 19-19 in three seasons back in Lubbock.
  • Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern: The former Wildcat linebacker has been Northwestern’s head coach since 2006, and has gone 70-56.
  • Paul Chryst, Wisconsin: Just finished his first season back at Wisconsin, going 10-3.
  • Troy Calhoun, Air Force: He is 67-50 in nine seasons.
  • Bryan Harsin, Boise State: 21-6 in two seasons.
  • Sean Kugler, UTEP: 14-23 in three seaons. is coaching his alma mater of UTEP. He was in the NFL before being hired in 2013, and has gone 14-23.
  • Kalani Sitake, BYU: Hired for this season, had been the defensive coordinator at Oregon State.
  • Mike Neu, Ball State: Another new hire, had been the QB coach for the New Orleans Saints.
  • John Bonameg,Central Michigan: 7-6 in his first season.
  • Paul Haynes, Kent State: 9-26 in three seasons.
  • Matt Wells, Utah State: 25-16 in three seasons.
  • Scott Satterfield, Appalachian State: 22-15 in three seasons at Appalachian State.
  • Nick Rolovich, Hawaii: Another new hire.
