ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit upset a lot of Georgia fans earlier this season when he dropped then-undefeated Bulldogs out of his top four schools, even before the South Carolina loss.
The good news is that UGA is back in good graces with Herbstreit, who is arguably the top influencer in college football.
Herbstreit released his new top four in the wee hours of Sunday morning, and he put UGA at No. 4.
The top three teams were (in order) LSU, Ohio State and Clemson.
Who did UGA beat out for the No. 4 spot? A fellow one-loss team from the SEC, Alabama.
That topic – whether UGA or Alabama deserves the No. 4 spot – will be a major storyline on Sunday when the rankings are released. Alabama has its one loss to a better opponent (LSU), but UGA has overall played a tougher schedule.
Of course, all the rankings and polls (even Herbstreit’s) are ultimately a moot point. If UGA beats Auburn and wins the SEC Championship, it will make the College Playoff. If the Bulldogs don’t, they likely won’t.
Although for some UGA fans, they will be happy to have Herbstreit on the side of the Bulldogs – at least for this week.
