UGA fans demand Aaron Murray play more for new Atlanta football team
Some UGA fans who attend football games for Atlanta’s new professional football team appear frustrated about quarterback Aaron Murray’s lack of playing time.
And they’re letting the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance American Football league know about it, either with signs at the game or tweets.
There have also been chants of “We Want Murray!” at the games.
Murray, 28, who starred at quarterback for the Bulldogs from 2010 to 2013 and remains one of the program’s most popular players, is a backup for the Legends. The starting quarterback is Matt Simms, the son of Phil Simms, former Super Bowl-quarterback of the New York Giants and current CBS Sports Broadcaster.
As far as the pro-Murray crowd, it’s not like the Legends have anything to lose. They are 0-3 with Simms starting at quarterback.
Ironically, the Legends used their top AAF draft pick to protect Murray, yet Simms beat out Murray for the No. 1 job in camp. Simms has had a rough season so far, completing 60 of 101 passes (59.4 percent) for 614 yards, along with 2 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.
What’s the holdup? Not only would the Legends have much to lose by making a change at quarterback, that switch could also attract more UGA fans in the Atlanta area to attend games.
Back to Murray: He was picked in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. He was with the team for two seasons before being released, and never played in a regular-season game. He was also signed in the offseason or was a member of the practice squad for three other NFL teams.
The only thing legendary about sims is the worst QBR in history.#AllHailATL #wewantmurray
