Welcome to your one-stop shop for UGA football news and takes every Monday through Friday. Today, we look at the rumored return of black helmets, a lengthy interview with Greg McGarity and one of the best groups of linebackers in the SEC.
UGA football’s agents of chaos
Edward Aschoff of ESPN ranked the best linebacker duos in the SEC, and the paring of Georgia ILB Roquan Smith and OLB Lorenzo Carter ranked behind only Shaun Dion Hamilton and Rashaan Evans of Alabama.
Carter flirted with the NFL after getting back to the destructive ways that made him a budding star as a freshman. After his 5-sack, 44-tackle junior year, Carter looks rejuvenated and poised for a big senior season as a top pass rusher. He has the potential to be an early round pick next year. Smith could actually be a better pro prospect and Georgia’s best defender. He led the Dawgs with 95 tackles last year and forced 2 fumbles with 6.5 TFLs. Smith is already built like an NFL linebacker.
While Smith and Carter are the headliners of UGA linebacking corps, there is talent littered throughout the unit. OLB Davin Bellamy, like Carter, decided to return to Athens for a final season instead of jumping to the NFL. He was fifth on the team in tackles (51) and tied with Carter and DL Trent Thompson for most sacks (5) last season. ILBs Natrez Patrick and Reggie Carter also are important players at linebacker. Patrick was second on the team in tackles (59), including 4.5 tackles for loss, while Carter had 45 tackles and 2 tackles for loss.
Paired with a defensive line that runs even deeper and includes the second-best DL duo in the SEC (Thompson and Jonathan Ledbetter), the members of UGA’s front seven have the potential to be agents of chaos in 2017.
Choppin’ it up with Old Greg
Anyone who hasn’t already should take the time to read this interview of UGA athletic director Greg McGarity by Mark Bradley of the AJC. Along with some insight into why he sat with Mark Richt at that awkward-as-hell press conference after Richt was fired, I found his answer to a question about why the athletic department isn’t where he wants it to be particularly illuminating.
If you’re not where you want to be as an athletic department, why not?
“I would love to go season to season: Football, [then] people excited about basketball and gymnastics, then baseball. [That’s] from a revenue standpoint. We go from fall to the winter to the spring. We’re competing at a high level. That has not happened yet. I want to see that happen. Especially our revenue sports, I want to see them become successful. Because we only have a few opportunities to generate revenue. All our other sports are complimentary admission. So, I want to see us maximize that opportunity, and the way you maximize it is to be successful.”
Gotta keep the reserve fund well-stocked, y’all.
No black helmets
Rumors swirled on Twitter on Thursday about the possibility of Georgia football wearing matte black helmets after the picture below began circulating.
As it turns out, rumors were all that it was. Fortunately or unfortunately, based on your opinion of the helmet, Radi Nabulsi of UGASports.com reported that the image is indeed fake.
