WATKINSVILLE — Georgia football players Terry Godwin and Brian Herrien came out to support players in another sport on Saturday.
The two Bulldogs were special guests of Oconee County Little League and attended the Opening Day Ceremony at Oconee Veterans Park in Watkinsville. Godwin, the leading returning receiver for Georgia’s football team and a rising junior, was invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitches for both the girls softball and boys baseball seasons. His good friend Herrien, a rising sophomore tailback, just came along for the ride. Both young men hung around and signed autographs and took pictures for a good half-hour or so afterward.
Godwin was a prolific-hitting third baseman and outfielder for Callaway High School and was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 33rd round before graduation. However, he opted to give up baseball in order to concentrate on football full time. He has caught 73 passes for 776 yards and 2 touchdowns in his first two seasons with the Bulldogs.
“Just coming out here brings back memories,” Godwin told the Little Leaguers. “It seems like yesterday I was in your same spot. Just come out here and have fun and you’re going to make a lot of friends. Have fun and make lots of friends and this game can take you a long way.”
Herrien rushed for 363 yards and 3 touchdowns as a backup tailback for Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.
