Three months after one of the Georgia GymDogs assistant coaches left the team at the end of January, the reason for his dismissal has surfaced.

According to Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald, first-year Georgia gymnastics assistant coach Charlie Tamayo was fired for unauthorized use of the credit card issued to him by the UGA Athletic Association.

Tamayo used the UGA-issued American Express credit card for $3,471 worth of purchases. The documents made available to ABH did not specify how much of that total was used for unauthorized purchases.

Weiszer reports that Tamayo agreed as part of his firing that he would repay the misused funds.

Although Georgia is still paying him through July 30, he also agreed to reduced payments as part of his termination.

Tamayo was in his first season as an assistant in Athens. He joined Courtney Kupets-Carter’s staff after spending the previous season as an assistant at Navy.
