Georgia basketball will play Florida on Tuesday, January 3o, 2018. Find game time, TV channel and how to watch online below.
Georgia can only hope that it has reached bottom and is about to climb out. It has dropped five of the six games, during a stretch it should have been banking wins, and now it enters what could be a rougher stretch, beginning with Florida on Tuesday night at Stegeman Coliseum.
“We still believe in ourselves,” Georgia freshman forward Nicolas Claxton said. “Coach, of course, believes in us and we know that we can get the job done, and we’ll continue to work to get it there.”
Georgia coach Mark Fox, on the other hand, was fairly candid when asked the same question on Monday.
“No, I think there’s no question that their confidence has been shaken a little bit. Anytime you have a loss or two together, that can happen,” Fox said. “We’ve got to fight to get that back.”
It’s not that Georgia is being blown out. It’s that it’s blowing leads: It led by 16 against both Arkansas and Auburn, and had a 6-point lead in the second half at Kansas State.
“We’ve got to finish games at this point. That’s been the common theme in the last few,” senior guard Juwan Parker said. “We’re close at the end, we just need to pull it out.”
Finishing is also a problem on offense, according to Fox. For all the problems with the Bulldogs’ half-court offense, Fox thinks that setting up shots hasn’t been the issue so much as making them has been.
The Bulldogs shot under 40 percent in three of their losses, including at Kansas State, and in the second half of the Auburn game. But a few of those shots going in, such as point guard Turtle Jackson’s missed driving layups late at Kansas State, could have turned that game.
“I don’t think we’ll change how we play,” Fox said. “When we go back and look at (the Kansas State loss), we wouldn’t have probably changed a whole lot. We would have thrown the ball to a different spot two or three times, and we needed to finish a play. And if we do that, then the result is different.”
