ATHENS — Georgia is coming off its worst performance of the season, and the Bulldogs have lost six of their past eight games. Once again, Georgia badly needs a win to get back on track, and Vanderbilt, which is one of just two teams in the SEC with a losing record, would seem to be the antidote.

But have the Bulldogs inspired much confidence lately, especially with their flat performance Saturday night in a 72-57 loss at Mississippi State? And for all of Vanderbilt’s struggles, Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville is a hard place to play.

“We have to return to form defensively to have chances to win,” coach Mark Fox said Monday, referring to his team being badly out-rebounded at Mississippi State, which was uncharacteristic.

Georgia will be without Jordan Harris, the sophomore guard who is suspended indefinitely and not practicing with the team. It’s not certain whether freshman point guard Teshaun Hightower, who has missed three games with the flu, will play.

But one player who could keep playing more is Pape Diatta. The senior forward, who had played rarely this season, had 12 points off the bench at Mississippi State. Why hasn’t Diatta played more? Fox said Diatta had an “awful” ankle sprain that cost him all of the preseason. He practiced with a plastic brace until the new year, then spent January building up strength in the ankle.

“He’s been practicing better and moving better, and was finally able to get in the game and perform,” Fox said. “He’s practiced pretty well the last couple of weeks. He was just so far behind and working him back in has been a challenge. But he’s starting to play well, and practice well, because he’s finally healthy.”

Then there’s Tyree Crump, the sophomore guard who played well in the win last week over Florida and then got the start at Mississippi State, his first of the season. Fox said that was in part to go with two starting point guards to combat Mississippi State doing the same, so it’s not clear whether Crump would start again at Vanderbilt.

“Tyree is obviously, similar to last year, he’s made progress throughout the season because of his approach,” Fox said. “He’s obviously more comfortable, still got a little ways to go. But he’s been a big plus for us shooting the ball.”
