WATCH: Georgia basketball coach Tom Crean: ‘There’s no question that Tyler Simmons was onside’
Tom Crean seems to very popular with Georgia fans so far and he’s got no problem discussing the Georgia football program. And this led to a pretty funny moment on Wednesday afternoon.
The new Georgia basketball coach was on campus handing Chick-fil-A sandwiches and meeting with Georgia students on Wednesday afternoon. One student asked Crean to take a video with him and weigh in on Georgia fans’ most popular and debated meme.
“There’s no question whatsoever that Tyler Simmons was onside,” Crean said.

The moment Crean is referring to happened in the national championship game when Georgia wide receiver Tyler Simmons to have blocked a punt and set up Georgia with excellent field position and a 13-0 lead. But Simmons was flagged for being offsides and Alabama was allowed to punt again. Alabama got the punt off this time and Georgia was unable to move the ball on the ensuing drive.

The Bulldogs went on to lose that game, as Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa eventually led Alabama to a 26-23 win in overtime.
Crean was hired to replace Mark Fox, after the former Georgia coach and the school parted ways after nine seasons. Prior to arriving at Georgia Crean has coached at Indiana and Marquette. Over the weekend, Crean addressed the Georgia crowd at G-Day, which shows that he understands how important the football program is to the Georgia fan base.
Hopefully Crean can bring the Georgia basketball program to similar heights without having a Tyler Simmons-esque moment in the national title game.
