ATHENS — Here’s what Georgia Southern coaches and players thought about Saturday’s 23-17 overtime loss to UGA:

Coach Willie Fritz on the loss: “They’re very disappointed. Very disappointed. They came in here with the intentions of winning. It felt like we could and had an opportunity to do it, and just couldn’t quite get it done. A lot of guys will worry about this play or that play or that call or this call, head coach included. It’s a whole entire ball game. We did some good things. I thought our guys battled.”

Fritz on near-misses: “We came really close on a bunch of runs. There were about five or six run plays where we just didn’t quite hit it. It would have been a really big rip.”

Fritz on moving on: “We’ve got to get rid of it. I was hoping to have the opportunity to talk to our guys and tell them to get rid of that game and it’s not going to mean anything unless we win these last two. We need to come out and play great these last couple weeks, and the best thing about it is we’re going to be playing at home for both of them. Luckily for me, I’ve got a great group of coaches and managers and players, and they’ll bounce back. So will the head coach.”

Safety Matt Dobson on stopping UGA: “Every week our defensive philosophy is to stop the run against a team like UGA. We played a lot of man (defense). There were times we switched up. Against a team like UGA that has some good receivers, you can’t play man every play. We had a great defensive game plan. We just didn’t make enough plays.”

Running back L.A. Ramsby: “There were some tough yards. We got them when we needed them, except at the end. They made a big stop. It happens like that sometimes.”

Quarterback Favian Upshaw: “The speed-option stuff to the outside, that wasn’t working. Those guys are pretty fast. It was more up the middle and try to get them with that read-zone option with the running back inside and the quarterback outside.”

Cornerback Caleb Williams: The No. 1 goal was to get the win and we didn’t get that, so we just have to keep working hard and correct everything we made mistakes on.

Williams: “We knew they were going to pound us because they’re in the SEC, so we knew they were going to pound us and take some deep shots. We had to be ready on the back end.”
