JaCoby Stevens has set his commitment date. Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and LSU fans will no doubt keep that one in mind.
The nation’s No. 2 safety and major SEC target will announce his college decision on Aug. 8 at a 2:30 p.m. ceremony from his high school. Stevens (Oakland High School/ Murfreesboro, Tenn. ) is rated as a five-star recruit and as the nation’s No. 25 overall prospect for 2017.
His recruiting has definitely been interesting.
Stevens was committed to LSU for a few months during his junior season but wound up backing off that pledge. UGA was his leader for most of this spring but that changed over the last two months. He told DawgNation and SEC Country that he updated his Top 7 schools back in June.
Several national and regional recruiting analysts have recently predicted he will choose either Alabama or LSU. There have been 14 predictions made regarding his decision on the 247Sports Crystal Ball feature since July 21. Each one of those has him going to either Alabama or LSU. Alabama currently leads with 39 percent of those predictions followed by UGA with 26 percent of those totals.
The 6-foot-2, 196-pounder recently told DawgNation he felt the best approach going forward with him was to recruit him as an athlete and not just as a safety.
Stevens is a coveted recruit for most of the SEC. Auburn wants him to play both sides of the ball. Alabama sees him at defensive back. Georgia would have a trophy set of safeties in this year’s class if it were to eventually sign Stevens.
Richard Lecounte III — the first commitment to Kirby Smart in the Class of 2017 — is also currently rated as the nation’s No. 1 safety.
