What Georgia football coach Kirby Smart said about Arkansas
On Playing Sam Pittman and Arkansas:
“We are excited to do that, going against a very good friend of mine in Coach Sam Pittman, who did just an unbelievable job while he was here. He and his wife, Jamie, meant so much to the community here in Athens and for so many of our kids. He helped build the foundation of what we have now. I am extremely happy for him for this opportunity he has gotten. I know he always had a special place in his heart for Arkansas, and he got this opportunity to go back.
“He’s got two really good coordinators on his staff. I know Barry [Odom] obviously from the SEC meetings and the SEC experience, him being in the SEC East. Barry is a good friend and a really good football coach. He did a great job at Missouri. His defense has always created a lot of problems. Then, obviously, Coach [Kendal] Briles is a really good football coach, and you have seen what he’s been able to do historically with offensives in terms of numbers. He does a great job.”
On the Georgia football quarterback situation:
“I am excited about the guys who have competed. They have all done a good job. They have all taken reps. Stetson [Bennett], Carson [Beck], JT [Daniels] and D’Wan [Mathis] have all done a good job, and I am excited to see those guys go out and play.”
On his impression of Rakeem Boyd along with other Arkansas personnel:
“Rakeem Boyd is as good as there is in the SEC. This guy has proven that he is a really good runner, physical runner, intelligent, smart. He sees the field. Any offensive line coach, like a head coach like Sam Pittman, is going to [have] a great offensive line unit. What they were able to do with a really tough run league, our league, last year—was as tough against the run as there is—he put up really good numbers. As far as Coach [Kendal] Briles, I have always had respect and watched everywhere he has been. As an offensive-minded coach, he creates a lot of issues. It’s like constant pressure because there is never a breather. They talk about it being warp speed, but it is that constant pressure of number one: balls vertical down the field, spacing of the field making you play the full 53 yards—in the tempo that they do it, it’s tough to defend especially if you talk to other people that have had to defend it.”
