NASHVILLE – Mark Richt makes his job pretty much sound like that of your average helicopter mom.

“We’re in the business of correction,” the Georgia coach said after his team’s not-nearly-as-convincing-as-last-week 31-14 victory over Vanderbilt.

If that is, indeed, the coach’s stock-in-trade, then business should be booming this week in Athens.

So much to correct.

There is a larger question one must ask while breaking down the fine points of any game against Vanderbilt – other than: What, Vandy is still in the SEC?

And that is: How will what happened on this quaint little field translate when Georgia plays the big boys?

Saturday held little comfort when thinking ahead to meetings with Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia Tech and, yes, even South Carolina next week.

So much to correct.

The 10 penalties, including a targeting call that cost the Bulldogs one of their dynamic edge rushers.

The inconsistent play of quarterback Greyson Lambert, who didn’t complete a pass until the third quarter. Vanderbilt out-gained the Bulldogs in the air, 295-141.

Some very un-special special teams moments: Marshall Morgan missing more field goals than he made (1-for-3), giving up possession on a pooch kickoff to a vacant part of the field in the fourth quarter.

And in general just simply slopping about as Georgia sometimes does against Vanderbilt, giving the Commodores hope that they might live up to the big gold letters that decorate the south stands: “Conquer and Prevail.” Vandy is just a bad influence on Georgia, like a Twinkie to a fat man.

One of his profession’s fundamental duties, Richt said, is “critiquing what we do and being gut-level honest about what we see and make it better.”

A very busy week lies ahead.
