ATHENS — The college football season has come to a close with Ohio State beating Notre Dame in the national championship.

For most of the rest of the sport, teams have been making changes to their roster. Ohio State and Notre Dame are the last two teams that can have underclassmen declare for the draft or have players enter the winter transfer portal window.

Georgia saw 12 players enter the transfer portal while bringing in six players.

And given there is a spring transfer window, those numbers aren’t likely to finish there.

For one, Georgia has some glaring needs that the portal could potentially fill. The decisions of outside linebacker Damon Wilson and running back Trevor Etienne left Georgia with some late holes on its roster. Wilson transferred to Missouri, while Etienne declared for the NFL draft.

Look for Georgia to use the April portal window — open from April 16 to April 25 — to address any lingering roster needs.

Quarterback has also been one of those positions, though there is an asterisk in that regard. Georgia isn’t just looking to take a body to take someone. It wants a veteran with some starting experience, given the state of Georgia’s current quarterback room.

Gunner Stockton is the only quarterback on Georgia’s roster to throw a pass in a game at this point. While whatever transfer quarterback that comes in may not compete for the starting job — Jaden Rashada didn’t when Georgia brought him in last spring — Kirby Smart clearly wants more experience at the quarterback position.

That becomes a difficult needle to thread but it is one Georgia will try to do in the spring.

As for outside linebacker and running back, the former is of far greater need. Gabe Harris is the most veteran player in Chidera Uzo-Diribe’s room but he’s also bounced between defensive end and outside linebacker to this point in his career. Behind him, there’s sophomore Quintavius Johnson and then freshmen Isaiah Gibson, Chase Linton and Darren Ikinnagbon.

Georgia did push hard for South Dakota transfer Mi’Quise Grace but he ended up at Kentucky.

As for running back, Nate Frazier returns for Georgia and figures to be the top option for the Bulldogs. Behind him, Branson Robinson, Roderick Robinson and Chauncey Bowens all battled injury this past season. Cash Jones is a known commodity, but he’s at his best in third-down packages. The Bulldogs will likely look for someone who could compliment and spell Frazier, rather than emerge as the lead running back.

There is a flip side to the April portal coin. Georgia will have another window where it will have to try and keep its roster together.

Just last offseason, Georgia saw defensive tackle Christen Miller announce he was going to enter the transfer portal. Miller then reversed course and remained at Georgia. He now enters the 2025 season as one of the most important players on the Georgia team.

Miller likely isn’t to be a one-off situation. Given the needs programs like Penn State and Miami have at this point, look for the April window to still have some level of movement, even if it does not compare to what we have seen over the last two months.

The days of not using the transfer portal are long gone. Georgia’s 2022 national championship team will almost certainly be the last to not add any players via the transfer portal prior to the season.

The Bulldogs have already added six players in the first window. And given the state of their roster entering a pivotal 2025 season, it certainly doesn’t seem satisfied with what it has at a few key spots.
