ATHENS — Brock Bowers wanted to make sure he was talking about the right stiff arm when speaking to reporters after Georgia’s 49-21 win.
After clarifying, he expressed his disappointment with the freakish display of athleticism that Bowers often makes look routine.
“He was coming at me, I kind of stuttered him, got up underneath him and tossed him to the ground,” Bowers said. “I wish I could’ve scored that.”
Bowers once again dominated UAB, just as e he did in his first-ever game in Sanford Stadium. When UAB visited in 2021, the then-freshman tight end caught 3 passes for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns.
On Saturday, he topped those numbers. He brought in 9 passes for 120 yards and another 2 touchdowns. His first came on a 41-yard catch and run which included his other stiff arm on the evening.
“He’s an animal. We try to get the ball in his hands,” Carson Beck said. “We did a good job tonight at getting him open and getting the ball in his hands. He makes plays after he does that.”
On the night, Bowers topped 2,000 yards in his career. It was the eighth career 100-yard game but the first of the 2023 season.
Georgia has made it a point to not lean on Bowers early in the season. But it appears as if the bubble wrap has come off the junior tight end. He’s got 16 receptions in the past two games for Georgia as it tries to further establish Carson Beck. The junior quarterback had his best game as a Bulldog on Saturday, throwing for 337 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Perhaps the area where Bowers helps Beck the most is in the red zone, an area the Bulldogs needed to see improvement in coming out the win over South Carolina.
Bowers’ first stiff arm helped set up a 4-yard Daijun Edwards touchdown. The second touchdown catch for Bowers came in the red zone, as he scored on a 10-yard pass from Beck.
That score gave Georgia a 42-14 lead and ended the evening for both Bowers and his quarterback.
“I thought he had a really good night and deservedly so,” Smart said of Bowers. “He got the crowd into the game, got a lot of juice. He’s hard to tackle.”
Georgia finished the night scoring touchdowns on all six of their drives into the red zone. That represents a significant improvement after scoring touchdowns on only three of its six drives against South Carolina.
For all the offensive nitpicking that came out of Georgia’s first SEC game, the UAB game seemed to rectify some of those issues.
“Today, I think we started off pretty fast and tried to be explosive,” Bowers said. “I think that helps our confidence in the red area and on third downs too. It felt pretty good today.”
Bowers laughed when asked if he had some vendetta against UAB. In his only two games against the Blazers, he’s got 4 touchdowns and 237 yards.
It’s not personal for Bowers, he promises. He’s put forth performances like he did on Saturday against the likes of Florida and Alabama.
More than anything, the touchdowns, the stiff arms, the wins, it’s all fun for Bowers.
“The ball comes to me,” Bowers said. “I just try to do what I can with it.”
