TIGER, Ga. -- Gunner Stockton threw for 403 yards, ran for another 102 and took part in seven total touchdowns on Saturday night.

We can’t say that is new. The fact he did it all on ESPN2 in front of a national TV audience wasn’t even a novelty.

Stockton and his Rabun County team also outgunned Georgia freshman QB Brock Vandagriff and his eventual Class A private state championship team in front of the country last fall.

Been there. Done that nine times before in high school. How many high school prospects could ever say that about their most recent 7-TD night?

Stockton’s typical high school game coming into Saturday’s 47-14 woodshedding of a well-respected and well-coached Pace Academy team has meant an average of three passing touchdowns and 1.5 rushing scores.

Guess that was an above-average night. Odd but true. Only for a young man like Stockton.

“Just coming out here knowing they were a 2A school and they were in our classification hopefully it was kind of like a little statement,” Stockton said. “We did really well today.”

That’s why Stockton is a special piece of the 2022 class for those Bulldogs in Athens. We saw two specific examples on Saturday night that stand out.

In the span of 20-plus years of covering All-Americans, future Heisman QBs and No.1 overall draft picks, we took in two Stockton-related moments we’d never seen before.

Stockton completed 14 of his 25 passes against Pace, but his last pitch of the night at Frank Snyder Stadium might have been one of his best.

It was at least the savviest.

When he conducted his post-game interview with ESPN, he fired off a shout-out to priority All-American TE target Oscar Delp. Delp has yet to make his commitment. That’s set for Sept. 30. He is a another potential jewel of the 2022 class for the Bulldogs.

It is at times hard to peg the biggest reason why Stockton wants #delpisadawg to come true. Is it because he can be his best bud on third downs? Or is it that the part-time cattle rancher deems Delp to have All-American roommate potential?
