Want to attack every day with the latest Georgia football recruiting info? That’s the Intel. This entry is about the latest with 5-star junior DL Lebbeus “LT” Overton of Milton High School in North Atlanta.
It is hard to not think every Plinko chip is falling where it needs to be for Kirby Smart this season.
The coach of the nation’s No. 1 team was wrapping up a pregame interview with new UGA sideline reporter DJ Shockley this month. When he did, the laser-focused Smart took a Lewis Cine bead to the locker room.
That was when 5-star junior DL Lebbeus “LT” Overton just happened to be walking by.
Overton, the Milton High All-American junior, ranks as the nation’s No. 1 DL and the No. 2 overall prospect for 2023 on the 247Sports Composite ratings.
Chris Brown and Justin Timberlake could not have choreographed those steps any better. Smart was able to take a brief pregame moment to dap up Overton.
“It felt great,” Overton said. “I wasn’t really expecting that. He walked past everybody else and dapped me up. That was a great feeling. He was just saying what’s up and just seeing how I was doing.”
Smart has his hands on every aspect of the program. But even he’s not that good.
Overton had been stalled for a few minutes waiting for those in front of him to move up the steps to their pregame seating.
If not for the crowd, he’d have missed that moment. If Smart would have given a shorter or a longer answer to one of Shockley’s pregame talking points, he also would have missed him.
Those are some severely clogged arteries from the field to the West End Zone recruiting bleachers on Saturdays. With the number of elite recruits in town for every Georgia home game this fall, it is nigh-impossible for anyone to predict the traffic flow.
It would’ve taken a team of MIT folks to plot that out. Smart just was lucky. Overton was also just that important of a recruit, too.
What’s the big message he hears from the Georgia staff?
“They just want me to be me,” Overton said. “Wherever I go. They will be grateful if I come there. But if I go anywhere else, they just want to see me develop and get developed.”
That’s unique to the pitch from UGA compared to other programs.
“I really just love the coaching staff,” Overton said.
