Georgia football podcast: UGA prepares to replace its ‘tackling machine’

Beginning of the show: How will Georgia replace linebacker Roquan Smith? UGA fans have asked that question a lot since Smith announced his decision Monday to enter the NFL draft. The answer isn’t clear. There are plenty of capable candidates at inside linebacker, but no obviously emerging star. It could be that the true replacement for Smith’s impact on the UGA defense comes from a position other than linebacker. I’ll explain why on the Tuesday show.

15-minute mark: DawgNation recruiting insider Jeff Sentell joins the show. Some of the topics covered include:

  • 5-star cornerback Tyson Campbell’s official visit to UGA
  • A look at the Bulldogs’ chances with 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge
  • An update on 4-star linebacker Quay Walker after his visit to Tennessee
  • And an answer to some questions DawgNation Daily listeners and viewers have had about rising sophomore defensive back Deangelo Gibbs

35-minute mark: I take a look at some other SEC headlines, including Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll’s decision to return to the NFL as he takes the same position with the Buffalo Bills. I also talk about how a possible rift with Nick Saban contributed to Daboll’s decision to leave, and why some think Daboll’s replacement could be former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze.

40-minute mark: I talk about some of the other UGA juniors who announced their draft-of-stay decisions over the weekend, as well as Jacob Eason’s decision to transfer.

End of show: I update the Gator Hater Countdown.
