ESPN names Georgia’s Mel Tucker Coordinator of the Week

Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker

Georgia’s defense had one of the best performances in the country this weekend, as it held Auburn to just 7 points overall and zero first downs in the second half.

The architect of the Bulldogs’ defense is getting some positive press. Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker was named Coordinator of the Week by ESPN‘s Adam Rittenberg.

In addition to the zero first downs allowed in the final 30 minutes, Georgia’s defense scored the team’s only touchdown, as Maurice Smith intercepted a Sean White pass in the third quarter to tie the game at 7. Georgia held Auburn to just 164 yards, its lowest output since 2012.

The Bulldogs’ defense usually plays well against Gus Malzahn and the Tigers. In the last three Georgia-Auburn games, Auburn has scored just 3 touchdowns, and all of them have come in the first quarter.

Tucker and Georgia step out of conference play this week as they take on Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday. Kickoff is set for noon ET on the SEC Network.
