It appears Georgia has made a late addition to its roster.
According to a report from Rusty Mansell of UGAsports.com, Georgia has added wide receiver Cole Speer to the roster.
Speer spent the previous four seasons at Georgia, playing largely as a special teams standout. He blocked a punt in last year’s SEC championship game.
Speer is from Calhoun, Georgia. In his four seasons in Athens, Speer caught 5 passes for 56 yards.
He gained an extra year of eligibility after a Colorado judge temporarily granted all 2022 signees a fifth year of eligibility.
Georgia coach Kirby Smart kept open the possibility of adding a player to the roster, which has a limit of 105 players.
“We’re always at or around the 105 limit,” Smart said. “That technically could be changing all the time. It’s not like a defined target in time that we’re at this or this. We’re always open to bringing on a new player if we have room. And if we don’t have room, then we can’t do that, and we’re stuck at it.”
Georgia’s wide receiver room has received plenty of criticism this offseason, as the Bulldogs have to replace five of their top six pass catchers from a season ago.
Speer did not have any receptions last season for Georgia.
“We lost a lot of production,” Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said. “A lot of that production was Zachariah Branch. We lost a lot of experience last year with some skill players, the four receivers and the tight end. That’s what we’re in the midst of doing right now, trying to find out who we are, the best way for us to move the ball offensively, to control the game, to be explosive.”
Georgia opens the season on Sept. 5 against Tennessee State.
