UPDATE: Shortly after this story was published, UGA announced the signing of Edwards.

When there’s any delay by a college team in announcing the signing of a 5-star recruit and longtime commitment on the first day of an NCAA signing period, there’s always some speculation that something may have gone wrong.

Georgia fans need not to worry about Anthony Edwards, the highest-rated basketball recruit in school history — according to his AAU coach.

Even though UGA had yet to announce anything by the end of business on Wednesday, the nation’s No. 2 overall basketball recruit signed his letter of intent with the Bulldogs much earlier in the day.

“I’ve got it with me,” said Winfred Jordan, Edwards’ AAU coach. “Anthony signed it this morning, and we faxed it this morning. They (Georgia) told us got it this morning. They got everything, and they were rockin’ and rollin’ about it.”

What’s the reason for UGA’s delay in announcing the news? In football, the Bulldogs traditionally tweet out or announce signees within a short time span after receiving the letters of intent.

“I don’t know (why Georgia hasn’t announced yet),” Jordan said. “I think they’re having a press conference tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. or something like that. Maybe they’re waiting for that? I don’t know. But he signed his national letter of intent with Georgia this morning.”

DawgNation reached out to UGA athletics department on Wednesday evening, and a basketball spokesperson said, “Our compliance office has yet to certify any papers today.”

Back to Edwards: The 6-foot-5 guard attends Atlanta’s Holy Spirit Prep School. Jordan said that Edwards signed the paperwork at his home – and not at his high school because it was closed today. The coach said his prized pupil was happy about finalizing things with UGA.

“It’s all a blessing,” Jordan said. “Anthony is excited about the opportunity to do some positive things at Georgia. I think the Georgia fans will have a chance to enjoy some Georgia basketball.”

Edwards will report to UGA in June to begin training with his college team. He’s the headliner for UGA’s 2019 recruiting class, which is ranked among the top 10 in the country. The Bulldogs signed two in the early period – 6-6 forward Jaykwon Walton of Montgomery, Ala., and 6-6 forward Toumani Camara of Hollywood, Fla.

On Wednesday, UGA expected the paperwork of Edwards, along with Christian Brown, a 6-6 forward from Mouth of Wilson, Va.

All four of UGA’s recruits are ranked among the nation’s top 100 players, causing some to believe that a “Fab Four” effect could be felt next season. At least three Bulldogs on last season’s teams are reportedly seeking to transfer, clearing the way for that possible scenario.
