ATHENS — Jake Fromm appears to still be the first-team quarterback at Georgia practices this week, if drills during the media viewing period are any indication. And so far they have been.

Kirby Smart has not named a starting quarterback this week, but has also indicated that Jacob Eason is not yet fully healthy, saying Monday that the sophomore was “much closer to 100 percent.” That wouldn’t preclude Eason from playing, as he did late in Saturday’s win over Tennessee, and perhaps more than in just mop-up duty.

But for what it’s worth, whenever the quarterbacks showed a pecking order on Wednesday, it was Fromm going first, then Eason and then Brice Ramsey. That was the order in both a play-polish drill (quarterbacks handing off to tailbacks) and a passing drill. Those were the drills during the media viewing period.

Of course, even if Fromm is the first-team quarterback during drills, that doesn’t mean Eason couldn’t play well enough to become the surprise starter. Smart has said it would be based on how each practices.

Both Fromm and Eason looked accurate in the throwing drill. Alas, it was just a small portion of Wednesday’s practice.

Anyway, a few other quick observations:

  • Senior inside linebacker Reggie Carter once again was not at practice. Carter, a reserve who sees plenty of snaps, suffered an undisclosed injury during the Tennessee game and Smart has categorized him as day-to-day. Normally if players don’t practice by Wednesday they don’t play in the game.
  • The offensive line remains the same, with redshirt freshman Solomon Kindley still starting at right guard.
  • The team was practicing outdoors again. This is the first time this year the team has been outdoors for every practice, after going indoors at least once each of the first five weeks. Saturday’s game is also the first noon start, after four night kickoffs and the other starting at 3:30 p.m.
