ATHENS — Georgia fans might not get to see Sony Michel at tailback again this week, but there is a pretty good chance they’ll get their first glimpse of Elijah Holyfield.

The freshman tailback from Atlanta, who at one point in preseason camp was running second team behind Nick Chubb, did not play in Saturday’s game against North Carolina. Holyfield was coming off an ankle injury that sidelined him for a little over a week late in preseason practices.

“Elijah was really close; Elijah could’ve played,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “It was a situation where he didn’t get many reps during the week. So we’re gonna try to get him more reps during the week so he’ll be able to play in the game.”

Meanwhile, Michel still has not been cleared from a broken arm suffered this summer. He warmed up before Saturday’s game, but was never expected to play, according to Smart.

“Sony, again, it’ll be up to the doctors and when they clear him,” Smart said. “When they clear him he’ll be able to play.”

Brendan Douglas was the second tailback in the game and had three carries for 23 yards, but did not have another rushing attempt after fumbling in the second quarter.

True freshman Brian Herrien was the next tailback in the game. He scored on his first carry — a 19-yard run on a toss-sweep right — and finished with 59 yards on seven carries.
