In the days since Georgia running back Zamir White tore his ACL, a number of former Georgia players have reached out to offer their support to the talented Georgia freshman. And now the most iconic Georgia Bulldog of all, Herschel Walker, has a message for White.

Walker, Georgia’s all-time leading rusher and the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner, spoke to 11 Alive’s Alex Glaze about White and his road back to becoming a talented player for the Bulldogs.

“Keep your head up. I’ve been with some great guys that had injuries like that and they came back and they’ve come back and they’ve come back strong and he can do the same thing,” Walker said. “Continually look up, continually keep God number one, continually work and do his thing. You know he’s got the talent, but never, never get down on himself. Just know that it happens and keep going.”

Plenty of star running backs have suffered injuries similar to White. In 2011, Adrian Peterson tore his ACL at the end of the season. The very next year he came back and ran for over 2,000 yards and won the NFL’s MVP award.

Some of the past Georgia running backs who have suffered season-ending knee injuries include Todd Gurley and Nick Chubb. But despite those injuries both players went on to become high draft picks. Gurley won the Offensive Player of the Year Award last season with the Los Angeles Rams.

And dealing with ACL injuries is nothing new for the Georgia staff, particularly when it comes to highly touted running backs. Since 2012, Georgia has signed eight top-10 running backs per the 247Sports Composite rankings. Four of those eight have had season-ending knee injuries.

Without White, who was the No. 1 overall running back in the 2018 class, Georgia will turn to D’Andre Swift, Elijah Holyfield, Brian Herrien and James Cook. Those four will also have to replace the production of Chubb and Sony Michel, who are now in the NFL.
