LOGANVILLE, Georgia — Jamyest Williams had to choose between something new or playing Saturdays in a place he’s called home.

It meant the 4-star cornerback prospect would reaffirm his commitment to South Carolina or flip to Georgia.

Williams, the nation’s No. 8 cornerback for 2017, chose South Carolina at a school ceremony on National Signing Day.

“I just think it was the best fit for me to get away and find myself as a man at South Carolina,” Williams said.

It was a very close call. Williams said there was a point he actually changed his mind and the decision was Georgia.

Williams came back to the school he committed to on Aug. 27. When the ceremony was over, he made sure to flash the Gamecocks signature “Spurs Up” upon request.

That likely brings closure to National Signing Day for Georgia. South Carolina coach Will Muschamp and his defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson were able to keep a hard-charging Georgia from poaching their top recruit.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound prospect had seen the decision go from what he characterized as “100 percent committed” to a dead heat. His father James “JJ” Williams told DawgNation last Thursday his son would probably choose Georgia if a decision had to be made at that time.

The nation’s No.8 cornerback prospect for 2017 still had to take that final official to South Carolina.

But his father also felt that in the end that race would still be South Carolina’s to lose.

That was the case. Muschamp and Robinson did not lose that one to Georgia.
