Due to the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19), the Southeastern Conference has announced that all SEC sports would be suspended until March 30. The league also announced on Thursday that it would be canceling the SEC basketball tournament, which was taking place in Nashville.

“Based on the latest developments and the continued spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Southeastern Conference today announced the suspension of regular season competition for teams in all sports on SEC campuses, as well SEC championship events, until March 30,” the statement said.

The Georgia men’s basketball team was set to play Florida on Thursday afternoon after winning against Ole Miss last night. The Georgia men’s baseball team was set to visit Florida for a three-game series this weekend. The Georgia softball team was going to take on Arkansas this weekend.

The University System of Georgia released an email, that DawgNation has obtained, to students, faculty and staff stating though that the school is set to “resume normal class operations following Spring Break on Monday, March 16.”

The email also stated that there are 12 confirmed cases and 19 presumptive cases in the state of Georgia. The email was sent to all 26 members of the system, of which Georgia is a part.

“We take very seriously the responsibility to make prudent choices for the well-being of the USG community,” the email said

Fellow SEC schools like Florida and Vanderbilt have already canceled in-person classes, moving them to an online format. Georgia was set to start spring practice on Tuesday, March 17 though it is not yet known if that falls under the SEC suspension. According to a report from Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger, spring practice is not under suspension and will be determined by each school.

On Wednesday night, Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity stated that a decision on Georgia’s spring game would be made at a later date. Ohio State, Michigan and Cincinnati have all already announced that they would be canceling their spring games, which were all scheduled for April.

G-Day is currently scheduled for April 18. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey is set to meet with the media at 1:30 p.m. ET.
