Former UGA basketball star Trey Thompkins confirmed on Thursday that he had contracted the coronavirus while playing basketball in Spain.
He also offered some hope for those who are fearing the pandemic on his Twitter account:
“Thank you to EVERYONE who has sent love and/or checked up on me. I’m feeling great and just waiting for the virus to pass at this point. Really means a lot.”
Thompkins, 29, was an unanimous selection as first team All-SEC for UGA as a sophomore in 2010, and also led the Bulldogs to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The 6-foot-11 forward was with the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers for three seasons, although much of that was spent recovering from a knee injury. After playing one year of professional basketball in Russia, Thompkins has been playing with Spain’s Real Madrid team in the EuroLeage since 2015.
Thompkins was the first EuroLeague player to test positive for the coronavirus, as Real Madrid announced earlier on Thursday that one its players had tested positive.
