ATHENS — Georgia didn’t come away injury-free from its big victory over South Carolina.

Fullback Christian Payne, who had just returned from a cracked fibula, walked off the field with crutches on Saturday night. A day later coach Mark Richt confirmed that Payne had re-injured the leg.

“He re-aggravated the same injury,” Richt said. “So not exactly sure what that means yet.”

Payne, a walk-on sophomore, had been the first-team fullback in the preseason before his injury, and after he returned for the Vanderbilt game. But after his injury senior Quayvon Hicks, the team’s only scholarship fullback, stepped back into the first-team role.

Hicks had two catches for 19 yards in Georgia’s 52-20 win over South Carolina.
