ATHENS — The question, it’s hard to believe now, was whether Jake Ganus could even play at this level, and whether he would see the field much at all in his one season at Georgia.
He did that, and much more.
Ganus, the transfer from UAB, was named the MVP of the 2015 Georgia football team on Saturday night at the team gala. It’s a crowning, and unexpected, achievement for a player who was left without a program this time last year, and had to earn his starting spot at Georgia in the preseason.
Ganus led Georgia in tackles, helping anchor a defense that was the strength of the team by the end of the year.
The other MVP awards, which were determined by the coaches:
- Sony Michel (offense)
- Jordan Jenkins (defense)
- Ryne Rankin (special teams)
The six captains for the season: John Theus and Malcolm Mitchell (offense), Jenkins and Ganus (defense), Nate Theus and Rankin (special teams).
The overall captain: John Theus.
Mitchell was also given the David Jacobs award for courage, in recognition of his fight back from numerous injuries to be the team’s leading receiver this season.
