ATHENS — One of the most intriguing aspects of the Kirby Smart hire is who he is going to bring in on his staff. That’s particularly interesting regarding the coordinators.

We’ll find out more when Smart speaks at his introductory news conference at 12:30, but at the moment we don’t know if he’ll continue to be involved with the defensive calls, who might be the defensive coordinator, who might be his offensive coordinator or what kind of offense he intends to run.

So far the offensive possibilities are running the gamut. According to various reports, Smart has reached out to Dan Enos, a pro-style guy at Arkansas, and Chip Lindsey, a spread guy at Southern Miss. There also are reports of mutual interest between Smart and Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, another spread guy.

Defensively, there continues to be the debate over whether Smart would be best served to keep Jeremy Pruitt on staff. As has been well-documented, the Bulldogs finished first in the nation in pass defense, second in the nation in red-zone defense, eighth in total defense and  ninth in scoring defense. So the thought is Georgia was an excellent defensive squad under Pruitt’s leadership.

But a closer look reveals maybe the Bulldogs’ defense wasn’t as awesome as it seemed. As it turns out, Georgia played only three SEC teams with winning records in 2015. Those teams were Alabama (12-1), Tennessee (8-4) and Florida (10-3). In those three games, the Bulldogs gave up an average of 437 yards and 34.3 points per game.

Then again, there’s no doubting Pruitt’s prowess as a recruiter. Certainly him and Smart together both on recruiting and defense would form a powerful team.

So far Smart has made only one known hire. Monday morning, Glenn Schumann, a defensive analyst at Alabama, announced via Twitter he is joining the Georgia staff as an assistant coach. His role, thus far, is unknown.

At this point, the possibilities are multiple. Hopefully Smart will shed some more light on it this afternoon.
