It wasn’t as smooth as the rest of this Athens Regional, but Georgia softball prevailed over Northwestern 9-7 in the championship on Sunday afternoon.
This means the No. 7 Bulldogs are heading to the Super Regionals, where they will face No. 10 Tennessee, which won the Knoxville Regional.
Justice Milz and Alysen Febrey were the heroes for Georgia on Sunday, each racking up a pair of extra-base hits and a home run. It was Febrey’s 2-run triple in the sixth that proved to be the difference.
In the circle, Georgia starter Mary Wilson Avant got roughed up a little bit but still turned in 4 solid innings. Kylie Bass pitched the final 3 innings of relief, allowing only 1 run.
Alyssa DiCarlo continued her hot streak by scoring 3 more runs vs the Wildcats after homering 3 times on Saturday. Jordan Doggett also recorded 3 hits on Sunday.
Looking ahead to the Super Regionals, Georgia took two of three from the Vols in the regular season. The Bulldogs lost the series opener in Knoxville 1-0 before responding with a pair of convincing wins to finish the weekend — 9-1 and 8-0. The teams did not meet in the SEC Tournament.
The Super Regionals will be held May 24-27. By virtue of being the higher seed, Georgia will host Tennessee.
