Fan expectations. Media expectations. National expectations.

There are always some wide-ranging opinions from all those demographics regarding the Georgia football team at the start of every season.

Some of those fans have had the red and black sunglasses on for too long. They will even readily admit that. The media that cover the team usually look to the same tried-and-true benchmarks. The same questions about experience and returnees on each side of the ball. Who’s back? Who will be the hardest to replace? Which young players have improved significantly?

That third element again looks to see if this can be the breakthrough year for the Bulldogs.

How ‘bout a different focus group? What do the opinions of Georgia’s commits and priority targets in the 2022 and 2023 recruiting cycles provide?

Some of these young men have heard directly from the staff and the guys on the team about what kind of run the Bulldogs might have in 2021.

There’s a lot to get to here. The fact that the term “natty” or “championship” showed up in over 50 percent of the responses shows what the young men who will play for Georgia have on their minds, too.

Let’s start with a large segment of the recruits currently committed to Georgia.

2022 Georgia football commitments

(all rankings culled from the 247Sports Composite scale)

3-star WR Dillon Bell (Houston, Tex.): “I’m expecting a great team this year and I expect them to be in that top four [at the end of the year] competing for a championship and win it all if anything.”

4-star CB Marquis Groves-Killebrew (Kennesaw, Ga.): “There is no limit to how good this team can be this year. There is no limit. They can win the natty. Really.”

3-star OT Jacob Hood (Nashville, Tenn.): “I think they can be truly great this fall honestly. I think they can go undefeated this year. That’s what I really think.”

4-star WR De’Nylon Morrissette (Kennesaw, Ga.): “I honestly can’t tell you what they will be this fall. But I expect them to air the ball out a lot. From what coach Kirby [Smart] said, they want to win and to be able to win the championship you have to be able to pass the ball. I expect them to pass the ball a lot or a little more than running the ball this year. That’s it. I just expect them to air the ball out a little more.”

“I’ve also been hearing a lot about AD [Mitchell] and up there they say he is a very good receiver. They tell me a lot about him. They say he is a very good receiver. If he stays consistent, he should have a very big year this year and he’s just a freshman.”

3-star OL Griffin Scroggs (Loganville, Ga.): “I think Georgia will shock the whole conference. I believe there is so much talent already there and the new talent coming in will help tremendously. Since a lot of the [players] are from Georgia, I believe that the fall team will already have that bonding that takes some teams years to build. Overall, I think this team will be very well-structured and ready to win a natty!”

3-star WR Cole Speer (Calhoun, Ga.): “I think the Bulldogs will have a championship team this year. I am expecting them to come together as one and have a successful year.”

5-star ATH Malaki Starks (Jefferson, Ga.): “To be great, they have been working really hard and a lot of people are counting them out but I think they are about to put an awakening on college football.”

4-star QB Gunner Stockton (Tiger, Ga.): “I’m excited to see them play and I can’t wait for the season.”

4-star DB JaCorey Thomas (Orlando, Fla.): “I think the Bulldogs will have a championship-bound team this year. I feel like this team will win a natty. I expect them to dominate opponents and bring it home.”

3-star P Brett Thorson (Melbourne, Australia): “I’m expecting the lads to be right up there again I guess. Obviously as excited as everyone to see how we go and guess we’ll just have to hope and wait for the best.”

4-star LB Jalon Walker (Salisbury, NC): “I think the team is loaded with an abundance of talent and coached by the best coaches. I feel like this season will be special and a season full of history. Overall, I feel like this is a national championship team.”

4-star LB CJ Washington (Cedartown, Ga): “Thinking and knowing is different. So I’ll let them show how bad they want it. I’m expecting to see ‘Dawgs flying around having fun with a great season as well.”

2023 Georgia football commitments

4-star DL Seven Cloud (Powder Springs, Ga.): “I’m definitely expecting a pounding defensive line, but overall the team is going out the gate and run hard on offense and have a rock-hard defense.”

4-star TE Pearce Spurlin III (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) “I think they will be a very energetic team that is going to be prepared and ready for every game. With an electric offense and the defense that Georgia is known to always have.”

2022 Georgia football recruiting targets

4-star TE Oscar Delp (Cumming, Ga.): “I think they are going to have a great team this fall. They have a lot of returning players on both sides of the ball and have a great team culture from what I have seen. I’m expecting them to go very far and make a run for the national championship.”

4-star DL Hero Kanu (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.): “What I expect is they are going to be a feared on the field. They should be the most physical team since they play in the SEC. When I talked to some players [on the team] they also felt really comfortable about that.”

3-star EDGE Carlton Madden Jr. (Ellenwood, Ga.): “I think UGA will have a great team and have a shot at winning the national championship.”

4-star DL Christen Miller (Ellenwood, Ga.): “Simple. A successful team. I expect them to dominate and win a lot of games. Even a natty.”

4-star CB Kayin Lee (Ellenwood, Ga.): “I expect them to be a fast and explosive team full of vets. I expect a national championship for sure.”
